The average pet insurance premium for the US is $6,000, according to a recent survey from Aon Hewitt.
But you don’t have to pay as much as you think if you choose the right insurance policy.
For example, if you have a dog, you might pay $8,000 per year in coverage, according the survey.
This is more than double the amount you pay in the rest of the country, and $6 million in Australia, where pets are generally more common.
And for people with more than one pet, you could pay $30,000 annually for a pet policy, compared to the $5,000 that your insurer pays for your own pet.
The survey of pet insurance companies also revealed that pet owners who live in a rural area tend to pay more, but those in cities tend to get more coverage.
For instance, Petco in Virginia paid $8.5 million for pet policyholders in the state.
And while the insurance company’s PetCo Preferred policy, which covers pet owners and their pets, is a little expensive at $1,100 per year, it has a more favorable rate than its competitors.
You might also be able to save a little bit more by opting for a dog and cat policy, according with Aon.
The Aon survey of more than 6,000 insurance companies surveyed 6,065 pet owners.
