The president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, has been accused of being a war criminal for ordering the country’s troops to shoot down a Russian fighter jet.
The accusation is being made by the European Union, and the Russian Foreign Ministry is calling for an investigation into the shooting down of the jet.
But the Ukrainian government says Yanukovych’s troops did not shoot down the plane and that the Ukrainian military is still conducting a criminal investigation.
Ukraine has been embroiled in a conflict with Russia over control of Crimea, which has been under Russian control since Russia annexed the peninsula in 2014.
A video published on Sunday by Russian news agency TASS showed a masked Ukrainian military official talking to reporters outside the Black Sea port of Mariupol.
He says he is investigating a complaint that a Russian plane violated Ukrainian airspace by flying over the city of Mariov, which lies in the Crimea peninsula.
The official said the plane was fired on by Ukrainian fighters after it crossed the airspace over Mariov.TASS reported that a similar incident took place in the Crimean town of Shchastia on Monday.
In the video, the official said a Ukrainian fighter jet had violated Ukrainian territory and was firing on a Russian bomber, while Ukrainian fighter jets were firing back.
He did not provide further details.
The Russian Foreign ministry accused Ukraine of having “a clear intention to destabilize the situation in Ukraine,” saying the plane in the video was shot down because it violated Ukrainian territorial airspace.
It said it had not received any official information from the Ukrainian side and that it had asked the Ukrainian authorities to investigate the incident.
Russia has denied that it is responsible for the shooting.
The United States and the European Commission have been investigating the incident since late March.
On Tuesday, the European Parliament voted to launch an investigation, which is expected to last up to four months.
The commission is expected later in the week to approve the creation of an independent commission to investigate and investigate the shootingdown of the plane.
The Ukrainian government has denied any involvement in the shooting, and it has called for the Russian authorities to halt the investigation.
